Our group is made up of both men and women who are interested in setting and meeting at least two self-sufficiency goals: one educational goal and one employment goal. Our group ranges in age from 18-50, we offer free structured childcare. The group allows participants to come together with folks who share similar concerns, like housing, employment, educational concerns, parenting and everyday struggles that come with living in poverty. Overtime, the group members develop true friendships and provide strength, encouragement and support to one another.
McKeesport rose to national importance during the 1900s as a center for manufacturing steel. The city’s population reached a peak of 55,355 in 1940. These days about 20,000 people call McKeesport home. McKeesport residents struggle with accessing employment opportunities outside of the town due to transportation barriers, they often have to take several buses to job interviews and work. However, the folks in this community are very connected and welcome any initiatives that help them build their communities. Each year, McKeesport hosts an annual community celebration to honor and highlight the diversity of their community, it is called the International Village.
